The tropical temperatures (for Dutch weather conditions) of around 32 degrees Celcius had Sonja sweating during the Brabant Open in Valkenswaard, a Dutch national tournament.
In the singles Sonja defeated Anniek van Koot, an up and coming 15 year old talent: 6-4, 6-4. In the first set Sonja came from behind to turn a 2-4 score into a 6-4 first set win by playing very concentrated and keeping her head cool under the aggressive play of Anniek, who made the mistakes in the end. The final was a clash between Sonja and Esther Vergeer. Although the outcome could be predicted with some certainty, it was an attractive match in which both players hit the ball well and hard and nice rallies could be seen. But the routine of Esther was decisive: 2-6, 1-6.In the doubles finals Sonja together with quad player Dorrie Timmermans played Esther Vergeer who had teamed up with Anniek van Koot. At a score of 4-0 for Esther and Anniek most people thought the match would be over soon. Mistake! Dorrie and Esther came back strongly and with tactical play won the set: 6-4. The second set was lost in no time: 0-6. In the third set Dorrie and Sonja again fought back from a 1-3 score to have Sonja serve for the match at 5-4. It took her four matchpoints. The decisive point was a ball that Sonja could just reach by extreme effort and returned, all stretched and from the top of her toes. The ball dropped on the top of the net and then came down with a thud at the other side. Game set match!
