SONJA PETERS AT THE NEC WHEELCHAIR TENNIS MASTERS AGAIN!
With two tournaments still to go, Sonja Peters can already look back on the past tennis year with satisfaction. But competition is very fierce and qualification for the Paralympics is not certain yet.
Thanks to her current fifth place in the world rankings, Sonja has again qualified for the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
A long hot summer
With two tournaments still to be played this year (the US Open and the Masters) Sonja can look back on a long hot summer with satisfaction .Up till now she has played no less than fifteen (!) international tournaments.
The hot summer was not a problem: Sonja loves a hot climate and it also gave her a beautiful tan this year! She can be satisfied about her results as well. In the singles she reached the semi-finals in no less than nine tournaments, she was a finalist in the Lakeshore World Challenge in Birmingham, USA, and she won the last three tournaments: the German Open, Inail Citta di Livorno in Italy and Disporta International in the Netherlands. Thanks to these results, Sonja is now fifth on the world ranking list.
Qualification for the Paralympics
With no less than five Dutch women in the world's top eight the competition is very fierce. Sonja's chances are good, but qualification for the Paralympics is not certain yet. The final selection will not be made until the middle of next year.
A winning team
In the women's doubles Sonja's regular partner is Esther Vergeer. They give real meaning to the expression 'a winning team' because in the last two years they have only lost two matches! So it is not surprising that they head the world double's rankings by a wide margin.
In the Roosevelt Cup, a tournament for national teams, Sonja and Esther represented the Netherlands in the most effective way possible by winning all their matches both in the singles and the doubles.
The result of the call for extra support in the last Newsletter was heart-warming! It resulted in spontaneous reactions by means of donations. Sonja's sponsors also lent a helping hand. CVSI Netherlands BV is one of the companies that want to be associated with Sonja's perseverance and performance-oriented attitude. CVSI propagates this in various ways, for instance at exhibitions with a large action photo of Sonja. This is moreover excellent promotion for wheelchair tennis. Convents Products Interieur bv, specialized in the furnishing of banks, hotels and offices, has also started to sponsor Sonja. The Foundation thanks everybody very much for their wonderful support, which makes it possible for Sonja to reach and maintain the high level that she has again demonstrated this season.
The Colours company in the USA has built a customized all-welded sports wheelchair for Sonja. It is nearly two kilograms lighter, and with its polished aluminium frame and red wheels and upholstery it looks like something straight out of Star Wars! For daily use Sonja now has a Colours 'Boing!' with spring suspension. So the material provided by sponsor Wheeler World is now in place and as perfect as can be.
NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters
Thanks to her excellent fifth place in the world rankings, Sonja has again qualified for the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters. This is the most important tournament in the professional wheelchair tennis circuit for the best eight men and women in the world. The event is being held in Eindhoven at the Indoor Sports Centre from 26-31 October. So for Sonja it is a home match and for sponsors, donors and other interested people a unique chance to see Sonja in action at the top level and to encourage her. The 'Foundation Friends of Wheelchair Tennis Player Sonja' will be actively present at the event again.
